Step 9: – Love Takes the First Step (Week 1 of 4)

12-Steps with Jesus - Guide (Step 9)

Step 9: Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.”

Devotion:

Step 9 is where the love of Jesus becomes visible.

Throughout the previous steps, Christ has been transforming our hearts. Now He invites us to become peacemakers by taking the initiative to restore relationships whenever possible.

Making amends is not simply saying, “I’m sorry.” It is taking responsibility for the harm we caused without blaming, defending, or expecting anything in return.

This is exactly how Jesus loved us.

He took the first step toward us while we were still far from Him.

As followers of Christ, we now walk in His footsteps

Biblical Example:

Before Zacchaeus ever attempted to make restitution, Jesus first came to his house (Luke 19). Christ’s love transformed Zacchaeus’ heart, and reconciliation naturally followed.

Jesus’ love always moves first.

Reflection Questions

1. Is there someone Jesus is asking me to approach with humility?

2. Am I seeking reconciliation or simply relief from guilt and shame?

 Action Step:

Pray over your Step 8 list.

Ask Jesus to show you which amends He would have you begin preparing for.

Remember: Love takes the first step because Jesus first loved us.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for taking the first step toward me. Give me courage to walk toward others with the same love You have shown me. Amen.

Bible Scripture to consider

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8
