Step 9: “ Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.”
Devotion:
One of the greatest temptations in Step 9 is expecting something in return.
We may hope for forgiveness. We may hope relationships are restored. We may hope everything returns to the way it once was. Sometimes that happens. Sometimes it doesn’t.
Jesus never conditioned His love upon people’s response. He simply loved faithfully.
Step 9 teaches us to do the same. We make amends because Jesus asks us to—not because we are guaranteed a particular result.
Biblical Example:
On the cross Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them…” Many who heard Him that day never accepted Him.
Yet He loved them anyway.
Reflection Questions
1. As I make amends to others, am I expecting something in return?
2. Can I love others simply because Jesus first loved me?
Action Step:
Entrust every conversation and every relationship to Jesus. Release your expectations to Him.
Remember: Love is faithful even when outcomes remain uncertain.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help me love without demanding results. Teach me to trust You with every relationship and every response. Amen.
