Step 8: “Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.”
Devotion:
Step 8 marks an important shift in our recovery journey.
For the first seven steps, Jesus has been transforming our relationship with Him and helping us see ourselves more honestly. Now He begins turning our hearts toward others.
Sin rarely affects only us. Our words, actions, attitudes, and neglect often leave wounds in the lives of family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and even strangers.
Making a list is not about reliving guilt. It is about allowing Jesus to show us where relationships have been damaged and where His love can begin restoring what has been broken.
For the newcomer, this step can feel overwhelming. You may remember people you have hurt or people who have hurt you. Don’t worry about fixing everything today. Simply ask Jesus to help you see others with His eyes.
The purpose of Step 8 is not condemnation. It is preparing our hearts to love as Christ loves.
Biblical Example:
When Zacchaeus encountered Jesus (Luke 19), his heart was transformed before anyone demanded repayment. Because of Christ’s love, he willingly desired to restore what he had taken.
Jesus changes the heart before He changes the behavior.
Reflection Questions:
1. Who comes to mind when I ask Jesus to show me those I have harmed?
2. Am I willing to let Christ reveal relationships that need healing?
Action Step:
Prayerfully begin your Step 8 list.
Do not judge it or act on it yet. Simply allow Jesus to bring names to your mind, trusting His wisdom and grace.
Remember: Jesus reveals relationships not to shame us, but to restore them.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, open my heart to see others as You see them. Give me honesty, courage, and compassion as I begin this step. Prepare me to become an instrument of Your reconciliation. Amen.
