Step 4 – Courage: Facing What We Find (3 of 4 part series)

12-Steps with Jesus - Guide (Step 4)

Step 4: “Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.”

Devotion: Courage: Facing What We Find

Honesty reveals the truth. Courage stays with it.

Courage in Step 4 does not mean fear disappears—it means fear no longer controls us. As the inventory unfolds, uncomfortable patterns may emerge: resentment, fear, pride, selfishness, or harm done to others. Courage allows us to look without turning away.

This courage is not self-generated. It flows from our surrender to Jesus. Because He walks with us, we can face what we once avoided. Because He has already accepted us, we do not need to reject ourselves.

Fear says, “If I see this, I’ll be overwhelmed.”
Faith says, “God is already here.”

Courage keeps us present long enough for His transformation to begin.

Bible Example: (Matthew 19:16-30, Mark 10:17-31, Luke 18:18-30)

When Jesus asked the rich young ruler to examine his heart, He exposed the one thing the man feared most—letting go.

The man walked away sad, not because Jesus was harsh, but because courage was required. Jesus lovingly revealed the truth; the decision was whether to face it.

Step 4 gives us that same choice

Reflection Questions:

 1. What parts of my inventory feel hardest to face, and why?

2. How does knowing Jesus walks with me change how I face these truths?

Closing Prayer:

Father, God, give me courage to stay present. When fear rises, remind me You are near.
Help me face truth without running or numbing. Strengthen me to continue the work You have begun. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.

Action Step:

When you feel resistance, pause—don’t quit. Take a breath. Pray briefly. Continue honestly, one line at a time.

Bible Scripture to consider

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:9
