Step 3 (Faith) Turning Our Will Over

12-Steps with Jesus - Guide (Step 3)

“Made a Decision to Turn Our Will and Our Lives Over to Care of God”.

Devotional: Not My Way But Yours

Surrendering our will not only means laying down our need to be in charge. It means acknowledging that our way hasn’t worked—and that God’s way is better, even when it’s unfamiliar.

This isn’t passive resignation—it’s active trust. It’s saying, “God, You lead. I’ll follow.” It’s releasing the pride, fear, and self-reliance that have kept us stuck.

Turning our will over is a daily choice to follow Jesus, even when it costs us control.

Bible Example:

Jesus in the Garden – Luke 22:39–46
On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus prayed in anguish—and still chose surrender.

“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” – Luke 22:42

Even Jesus surrendered His will to the Father—and trusted Him fully.

Reflection Questions:

1. What part of my will (plans, desires, control) is hardest for me to surrender?

2. What would it mean to say, “Not my will, but Yours” in this season of my life?

Prayer:

Father, I confess that I like to stay in control. But I see that my way isn’t working. Today, I choose to trust You and surrender my will. Lead me. Guide me. Shape me. Not my way, but Yours. Help me walk by faith and not by sight. In Jesus’ name, Amen

Bible Scripture to consider:

“Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.’” – Matthew 16:24

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” – James 4:10
