Step 3: (Faith) Delayed Gratification

12-Steps with Jesus - Guide (Step 3)

“Made a Decision to Turn Our Will and Our Lives Over to Care of God”.

Devotion Part 4: Delayed Gratification

Step 3 isn’t about stronger willpower—it’s about surrender. It’s the decision to stop managing life on our own terms and trust God’s care. Delayed gratification becomes possible when we believe God’s way, though slower, is better than any shortcut.

Life tempts us with quick solutions. Pain, discomfort, and waiting can feel unbearable, so we reach for immediate relief—but shortcuts often pull us away from God’s best.

Jesus faced this in the wilderness. Though promised authority, Satan offered instant power without the cross. Jesus refused. He chose obedience over ease and trust over control—placing His will fully in the Father’s care.

Recovery and spiritual growth rarely come fast. Healing takes time. Faith requires patience. Step 3 invites us to release control and trust that God’s care is enough, even when progress feels slow. As we take the next right step, we discover that what lasts comes from Him.

Bible Example: Jesus’ Temptation – Matthew 4:1–11

When Satan offered Jesus immediate authority, Jesus refused to step outside the Father’s will. He chose surrender over a shortcut—and secured true freedom for those who follow Him.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Where am I still trying to control outcomes instead of trusting God’s care?
  2. What shortcut am I tempted to take instead of surrendering this area to God?
  3. What is my “next right step” if I turn my will over to God today?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, I admit I can’t manage my life on my own. I believe You can restore what I cannot. Today I turn my will and my life over to Your care. Help me choose obedience over shortcuts and trust You one step at a time. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.

Bible Scripture to consider:

  • Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.  “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” (Matthew 4:8-10_
