Step 2: (HOPE) Examining Your Relationship with Trust

12 Steps with Jesus - Draft

“Came to believe in a Power Greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity”.

The Principle behind Step Two is Hope. Trust and Hope are deeply intertwined—trust is the foundation that makes hope possible. When we trust in God’s character and promises, we can hope for healing, transformation, and a future beyond our struggles. But this trust isn’t just in any abstract idea of God—it’s in Jesus, who showed us that God is faithful, loving, and present.

Reflection:
Trust is challenging, especially if it’s been broken in the past. Many of us develop the belief that we must do everything ourselves because others can’t be trusted. Addiction often thrives in secrecy and self-reliance. Trusting others—and especially trusting God—requires vulnerability. Jesus models this vulnerability perfectly—He trusted the Father fully, even when it was painful. By trusting Jesus, we can begin to heal and experience a deeper relationship with God.

Ask Yourself:

  • Do I find it difficult to trust others? Why?
  • What happens when I need help—do I reach out or isolate?
  • How does my past affect my ability to trust God today?
  • How does trusting in Jesus’ love and sacrifice influence my ability to hope?

Prayer:

God, I want to trust You, but I admit it’s hard. I’ve been hurt before, and sometimes I feel like I have to protect myself by staying in control. I see now how this need for control has kept me isolated—even from You. I know You understand my pain and vulnerability because You lived it too. Help me let go of the belief that I have to do everything on my own. Teach me how to ask for help, to be honest, and to let others in. Most of all, help me to begin trusting You with the parts of my life that feel unsafe. I open my heart, even if just a little today, and ask You to meet me there. This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
