Devotion: The Power of Truth Telling
There’s something powerful—and healing—about speaking the truth out loud. Step 1 isn’t just about admitting our powerlessness to ourselves; it’s also about bringing that truth into the light. Confession breaks the silence. It’s where we stop carrying the burden alone and allow God and others into our story.
Truth-telling is not about shame—it’s about freedom. When we confess, we let go of the lies we’ve told ourselves and others. We stop hiding. And in that space, grace rushes in.
Bible Example:
After committing adultery with Bathsheba and arranging the death of her husband, David tried to cover his sin. But when the prophet Nathan confronted him, David finally confessed:
“I have sinned against the Lord.” (2 Samuel 12:13)
Rather than crushing him, confession became the turning point. David poured out his further heart in Psalm 51: “Against you, and you alone, have I sinned… Create in me a clean heart, O God.”
His honesty didn’t bring condemnation—it opened the door to mercy and restoration.
Reflection Questions:
1. What truth have I been avoiding or hiding, even from myself?
2. What would it look like to bring that truth into the light—with God, and with a trusted person?
Closing Thought:
Confession isn’t about punishment—it’s about healing. When we name the truth, we invite God’s grace into the very place we once tried to cover up. The truth might be hard, but it’s also the path to peace.
Closing Prayer:
God, You already know everything about me—yet You wait for me to speak the truth. I’ve hidden, denied, and run, but today I choose confession. I bring You my mess, my mistakes, and my sin. Cleanse me. Heal me. Teach me to walk in the freedom that truth brings. Thank You for Your faithful love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Bible Verses:
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”—
1 John 1:9 (ESV)
“People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.” —
Proverbs 28:13 (NLT)
