Step 1 – Honesty

12 Steps with Jesus

“We admitted we were powerless over our dependencies that our lives have become unmanageable”.

In order to open ourselves up to God, we must be ready to face ourselves and and those around us with honesty. Whether we are lying to ourselves, or others, dishonesty obscures the truth and allows us to do little growing or healing. This might seem like a scary first step, but it’s paramount so that we can trust ourselves and God as we continue through the steps of our journey.

  • To start off, make these four lists on paper or in your head: In what ways am I honestly following or not following Jesus? Take the extra moment to make sure you’re being honest to yourself.

Honestly following:

        Honestly not following:

  • Where is my life less manageable and peaceful than I would like it to be? (List)
  • In what ways do I depend on and/or use people, places, and things versus Jesus to help me be happier or to help me cope with things I am not happy with? (List)

Bible Scripture to consider:

  • “Therefore, each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.”  –Ephesians 4:25
  • “An honest witness tells the truth, but a false witness tells.” –Proverbs 12:17
  • “Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” –John 8:31
