Ask God to show you what from your past and present is holding you hostage from moving forward. Write it down and pray and declare that those things no longer have a stronghold of your progression of faith. Trust that God’s future for you is greater than your past mistakes, and that he is doing a new thing in your life, by helping you deal with the old.
“We admitted we were powerless over our dependencies (and strongholds) and that our lives have become unmanageable”.
The principle behind step one is honesty. It asks us to humbly look at our lives and tell the truth about the places where we have been trapped—where our own strength, wisdom, and willpower have failed us. It’s here, in this honest admission, that the journey toward healing begins.
Reflection:
Letting go of the past can be painful and difficult. It starts with being honest—with ourselves and with God. Many of us carry emotional or psychological scars from things we’ve never truly faced. When left unresolved, these wounds can quietly hold us back, even as we try to move forward. But honesty opens the door to healing. Bringing our past to God is a powerful first step toward freedom. Trust Him as you take that step and choose to move forward.
Application:
Ask God to show you what from your past and present is holding you hostage from moving forward. Write it down and pray and declare that those things no longer have a stronghold of your progression of faith. Trust that God’s future for you is greater than your past mistakes, and that he is doing a new thing in your life, by helping you deal with the old.
Prayer:
Lord, I thank you that you have a hope and future for my life, and that you are doing a new thing in me! I ask that you help me to heal and let go of my hurtful past and press forward in faith. This is a tough journey for me, but I thank you that you are walking with me in it I as I grow to be more honest and trust in Your plans for my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Bible Scripture to consider:
PHILIPPIANS 3:13-14 (NLT)
“No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.”
