Step 1 – Honesty

12 Steps with Jesus - Draft

“We admitted we were powerless over our dependencies (and strongholds) and that our lives have become unmanageable”.

The principle behind step one is honesty. It asks us to humbly look at our lives and tell the truth about the places where we have been trapped—where our own strength, wisdom, and willpower have failed us. It’s here, in this honest admission, that the journey toward healing begins.

We can better understand this step by reflecting on three areas:

Concept 1: Powerlessness over Our Patterns

   * Have you ever tried to stop or change a harmful behavior, mindset, or desire on your own?

   * What was the result?

Concept 2: Powerlessness over the Consequences

   * What have you done to try to manage or contain the damage (such as setting personal limits, making new promises, or avoiding certain triggers)?

   * What was the result?

Concept 3: Unmanageability of Life

   * What painful outcomes finally showed you that you could not break free by your own efforts?

Prayer:

“God, I admit that I have tried to fix myself and failed. I cannot change my heart by my own strength. I surrender my struggles to You. Please meet me in my weakness and begin the work of restoration in my life. Amen

Bible Scripture to consider:

1. John 8:34, 36 (NIV)
“Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.’”

1. 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
