Step 2: Hope – “Came to Believe: A Journey of Hope in Jesus”

12-Steps with Jesus - Guide (Step 2)

“Came to believe in a Power Greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity”.

Devotional Thought

Step 2 invites us into a journey of hope—rooted not in ourselves, but in God, the source of true healing and wholeness. It begins with three words: “Came to believe.”
These words reflect a process, not perfection—a spiritual unfolding that mirrors the walk of those who follow Jesus:

  • We Came – We showed up, broken and desperate. Whether through pain, consequence, or weariness, we reached the end of ourselves.
  • We Came To – Like the prodigal son (Luke 15), we began to awaken—mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
  • We Came to Believe – We dared to hope that God, through Christ, could do what we could not: restore us to peace, purpose, and sanity.

This process echoes stories in Scripture. Peter’s encounter walking on the water was dramatic (Matt. 14); the woman at the well (John 4) experienced a slower awakening—both found real hope in Jesus.

As we grow, we see that faith isn’t blind belief. It’s a relationship built through trust, experience, and surrender.

Key Insights

Hope Begins When We Suit up and Show Up
Healing starts not with answers, but with honesty. We come to Jesus just as we are—burdened and in need.

Belief Is a Process, Not a Switch
“Came to believe” reflects an unfolding journey. Faith grows through real encounters with Jesus.

Jesus Alone Restores Wholeness
Step Two isn’t about willpower—it’s surrendering to the living Christ, who truly restores us.

Questions for Reflection

1. Where do I need to “show up” honestly before Jesus?  What am I still trying to manage alone?

2. How has Jesus grown my faith through real experiences?   Where have I seen His trustworthiness?

3. What’s one area I need to surrender to Him today? What’s a simple step of trust I can take?

Prayer

Jesus, I’m tired of doing life on my own. I don’t want to just believe in a Higher Power—I want to know You. I’ve tried to stay in control, and it’s left me empty. Today, I open my heart to hope again. Restore what’s broken. Help me let go of what can’t save me. Fill me with Your love. I believe You are the One who can restore me to sanity. Step by step, I want to follow You. Amen.

Bible Verses

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13 (NIV)

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” 1 Peter 5:10
