Working the Steps: The Errors We Can Make

12 Steps with Jesus (Series)

In this seres we explore twelve false thoughts and assumptions which have derailed many in their recovery, and some reflect the mistaken thinking of some sincerely trying to do things God’s way. Awareness is the first step in avoiding these common missteps.

Thought / Concept:

In recovery—and in our walk with God—it’s not always the big decisions that trip us up. Often, it’s the small lies we tell ourselves, the assumptions we lean on, or the shortcuts we think will work. These errors might seem harmless at first, but they can derail progress and keep us bound. Awareness of these pitfalls is the first step toward freedom.

Two Common Errors to Avoid:

“I can quit tomorrow.”

Tomorrow always sounds easier—but tomorrow has no power. Change is only ever possible in the present moment. Waiting one more day is really a decision to remain stuck in the same cycle that has already brought destruction.

Scripture— “How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog— it’s here a little while, then it’s gone…Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.”— James 4:14, 17

“I can handle it by just trying harder or having more will power.”

If trying harder worked, we wouldn’t keep falling back. Our own strength may bring short bursts of success, but never lasting freedom. It’s only when we exchange our weakness for God’s strength that true transformation begins. His power—not ours—gives us victory.

Scripture—“But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.”— Isaiah 40:31

Reflection Questions:

Where have I been telling myself “tomorrow” instead of choosing change today?

In what areas of my recovery have I been relying on my own willpower instead of God’s strength?

Closing Prayer:

Lord, thank You for revealing the lies that keep me stuck. Help me to stop putting off what You are calling me to do today. Teach me to lean not on my own strength, but on Your unfailing power. May I walk in freedom—not tomorrow, but today. Amen.
